Why I Wear a Riding Helmet
I grew up around horses, my sister and I would jump on our ponies "Ginger" and "Spike" any chance we could. We would swing on them bareback, slide off their butts, stand on their backs just out in the field or pen. I don't remember ever thinking I better run grab my helmet before I work with my horses or go for a ride. I remember seeing one picture of us when we were really young with some ugly looking helmets on.
We started to go to local fairs and compete in various gymkhana events I remember having horses that were too much and too hot for me at that age. I got bucked off, I got dumped, I fell off and thinking about it now I was lucky because looking back because I don't think I was ever wearing a helmet during those events and never seriously got hurt. I remember colliding with another horse and rider and ended up getting whiplash.
Now I don't want my mom to read this and think "wow was I a bad parent?". Times were different, helmets weren't the usual or mandatory under a certain age, nobody really wore them. Flash forward to today and there has been a lot more research about concussions and head trauma.
Fallon Taylor Breaking The Stigma Around Helmets
Also we have individuals like Fallon Taylor who are taking a stand to change the stigma around Cowgirls and wearing a helmet. Somewhere along the lines we have associated helmets and cowgirls as a sign of weakness, or incompetence which couldn't be farther from the truth. It's people being more educated and brave enough to go against the grain, to look different, to be different and not care what other competitors think.
That being said I'm not worried about what my competitors think when I rock up to the event wearing my black and white cheetah print helmet. For me know that I have young eyes following my every move, they watch what I'm doing an love to copy. My three year old son said to me at one of the shows.."Mom where is your helmet??"...from that moment on I have and will always wear one.
So lets break the stigma around cowgirls wearing helmets.
Here are some of my favourite hand picked helmets just for you..
